It’s no exaggeration to say that the name Claudio Monteverdi would be nowhere near as familiar in concert halls as it is today without Sir John Eliot Gardiner. The early music specialist has been travelling the world with his ensembles for decades, performing the works of the composer who is known as the inventor of opera thanks to his »Orfeo«, who changed sacred music forever with his »Marienvesper« and who thereby ushered in the transition from the Renaissance to Baroque. Gardiner even named his phenomenal choir, which he established in 1964, after Monteverdi. The conductor now returns to the Elbphilharmonie with that choir and his English Baroque Soloists, and juxtaposes sacred and secular works by the choir’s namesake before and after the interval.
