It was a deeply moving moment when Igor Levit accepted his Opus Klassik award as »Instrumentalist of the Year« in autumn 2019 and, with an audible tremor in his voice, dedicated the prize to the victims of the Halle terror attack. The first movement of the »Moonlight Sonata« – that showpiece of all romantically inclined piano lovers, which he had played beforehand – was suddenly instilled once again with its real meaning: plaintive, serious, pressing, full of doubt and empty of hope. Only in the second movement does the light return. At the Elbphilharmonie, for the sixth concert in his Beethoven cycle, Igor Levit grants the audience this ray of hope again, and performs the famous sonata in C sharp minor in full.
