When he received the enquiry from famous Milan opera house La Scala, it did not take Riccardo Chailly long to make up his mind: »I am a Milan native myself. My father worked at La Scala, I started to absorb opera as a small child, and was assistant to Claudio Abbado for a while. Our family lives here. I did not have a choice.« In 2015 Chailly returned home from Leipzig, where he had been in charge of the Gewandhaus Orchestra for nearly ten years, and took up the position not only as music director of the opera house, but also of its famous orchestra Filarmonica della Scala. The Italian musicians are presumably familiar with the recording of the complete Beethoven symphonies that their conductor made a few years before with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, a cycle that really set new standards for an interpretation both pleasantly light and at the same time dynamic. In this spirit, the Filarmonica will doubtless follow Riccardo Chailly’s lead and add a further exciting facet to Beethoven’s anniversary year.
