In 2020 Hamburg und Prague have been twin towns for 30 years – reason to celebrate! The close friendship between the two cities is one of the success stories of European unification. As Hamburg’s cultural ambassador, the Felix Mendelssohn Youth Orchestra has maintained close connections with Prague for many years, and regularly appears in the city.
Tonight’s programme revolves around the two cities that are linked with one another by the rivers Vltava (German: Moldau) and Elbe. The young musicians open the evening with the concert overture »Meeresstille und Glückliche Fahrt« (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) by the Hamburg composer Felix Mendelssohn, followed by one of the loveliest and most powerful cello concertos of its time, written by the Czech composer Antonin Dvořák. The concert is brought to a joyful end by two movements from Johannes Brahms’s Second Symphony, inspired by the peace and tranquillity of water.
At the side of the Felix Mendelssohn Youth Orchestra, Till Schuler can be heard on the cello. The winner of the 12th International Antonio Janigro Junior Competition in 2020 and student of Prof. Sebastian Klinger at the Hamburg College of Music shows the many qualities of his wonderful instrument in the Dvořák Cello Concerto.
