As part of the new contemporary-music festival »Elbphilharmonie Visions«, Hamburg’s coolest chamber orchestra presents three samples of its recent impressive activity in the field of first performances. Be it Enno Poppe, Isabel Mundry or Rebecca Saunders – Ensemble Resonanz is friends with half the New Music world.
Salt, oil, fat. Felt, peat, glass, cupboard. German composer Enno Poppe’s catalogue of works reads like a shopping list for the supermarket or the DIY store. Poppe’s one-word titles are not only meant to trigger associations (whatever they may be), but also to describe the consistency of the music in each case. With his work »Stoff«, Ensemble Resonanz already celebrated the opening of its »Resonanzraum Festival« in 2018. While some years before that, in 2012, the same musicians gave the first performance of the work »Depuis le jour« by the then Composer in Residence, Isabel Mundry, at the »Hamburger Ostertöne«.
As is often the case in Mundry’s compositions, there is a close link with Early Music – in this case with the choral works of the Dutch Renaissance composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. Likewise in 2012, Ensemble Resonanz gave the premiere of »Ire« by the British-German composer Rebecca Saunders in Huddersfield. It is the last in a series of three pieces for strings that explore the phenomenon of the trill, here with the help of a solo cello.
