Poulenc’s organ is a seismograph between earth and the heavens, between feeling and reason; it registers profound reflection and abrupt outbreaks. The composer has a heart for the chanson and variety theatres when organ winds rise up heavenwards. Schubert is another composer given to Romantic flights of fancy, while Milhaud creates the world in rumba rhythms and jazz fugues, and Bach believes in Divine creation out of the void.
