After starting off in the divided city of Berlin in 1980 with boisterous noise constructions, the sound of Einstürzende Neubauten has undergone numerous transformations over the years, and can still very much be described as avant-garde today. To prevent the band from being overshadowed by their impressive oeuvre, the members – Blixa Bargeld, N.U. Unruh, Alexander Hacke, Jochen Arbeit and Rudolf Moser – are always setting themselves new artistic goals. Be it theatre projects such as Heiner Müller’s »Hamletmachine«, the highly experimental »Musterhaus« project, or »Lament«, a musical work about the outbreak of the First World War based on the story of the destruction of the Belgian town of Diksmuide – the unpredictability of the Einstürzende Neubauten stops them from becoming artefacts and secures them a place in the contemporary avant-garde canon.
