As titular organist of the church of St. Sulpice in Paris, Daniel Roth is successor to such illustrious figures as Charles-Marie Widor and Marcel Dupré. Roth is master of one of the most famous instruments of the legendary 19th century French organ builder Cavaillé-Coll. So much tradition brings its obligations with it, as the programme of Roth’s Elbphilharmonie guest appearance shows: Boëllmann, Franck and Vierne were among the outstanding composers of the French organ tradition.

Franck’s Chorale in E major once forged a completely new genre; the suite by Boëllmann is the far less well-known (but still quite delightful) sister of his popular»Suite gothique«, while Vierne’s catchy Third Symphony is a true classic. The recital is completed by a few movements from Roth’s own Magnificat, and of course there is a piece by Bach: the dramatic G minor Fantasia with the »boiling kettle fugue«, as the danceful closing fugue is jokingly referred to in German. The source of the nickname is the following text that can be sung to the tune: The kettle’s boiling / The kettle’s boiling / Take the lid off / The kettle’s boiling…
