Schumann’s secular oratorio »Paradise and the Peri« is based on a Persian tale in which a fallen angel, a peri, can only return to paradise if it brings with it the »gift that is most dear to heaven«. The work, which blends oratorical, operatic and lied-like features in an Oriental ambience, seems to hover between worlds just like its protagonist. The peri, whose story Schumann took from the epic poem »Lalla Rookh« by Thomas Moore, is an earthly and heavenly being at the same time. During the course of the story, it attempts to gain entry to Paradise, which should in fact remain inaccessible to it due to its origins.
