French master pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has many musical heroes, from Chopin to Messiaen, but he has a particularly strong relationship to the music of Maurice Ravel. After all, Thibaudet’s own piano teacher was herself a pupil of the great French composer! Among his showpieces is Ravel’s incredibly tricky, jazz-inflected Piano Concerto in G major, of which Thibaudet gave a triumphant performance aged only eleven.

Now he plays the same work once more with great elan – and then turns his attention, accompanied by the energetic Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Sir Antonio Pappano, to Ravel admirer George Gershwin and his classic »I Got Rhythm«. Thibaudet is nothing short of infatuated with Gershwin’s sound, with the mixture of jazz and classical: »His music is boundless.« It shares this trait with Béla Bartók and his Divertimento for string orchestra, which artfully combines Baroque models with the spirit of folk music.
