There is a wistful hint of the fin de siècle about Johannes Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet in B minor. The work was given its first performance in 1891, and Brahms dedicated it to the clarinet virtuoso Richard Mühlfeld – like the composer a native of Hamburg. The undulating figures and dramatic climaxes of the first movement reappear in the final movement, thus bringing full circle this sad and beautiful score so full of depth.
