Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire has already made two successful appearances at the Elbphilharmonie as a special guest of the Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel. Now the American comes to Hamburg with his own quartet, an exquisite line-up of artists.
Born in Oakland/California in 1982 to Nigerian parents, Akinmusire can look back on a 20-year career that has placed him on the Olympus of world jazz. The winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk Competition embraces the jazz tradition from its beginnings to the present day. He is constantly on the lookout for new ways of thinking, for new explanations and musical patterns. In the process, he interweaves inspirations from other genres, from art and life itself into compositions that are as poetic and charming as they are bold and uncompromising. Surprisingly, he names folk icon Joni Mitchell as his prime influence. But Akinmusire, too, loves expressing his emotions and his political consciousness in his music – as well as his fondness for storytelling.
