Composed architecture

The pianist and composer Büșra Kayikçi grew up with music in her native city of Istanbul, but initially decided to study interior architecture and environmental design after school. However, she finally found the creative freedom she had always been looking for in composition. Inspired by composers of modern classical music such as John Cage and Michael Nyman, she wrote her first works in 2019 – beguiling piano pieces that only appear dreamy and sketchy at first glance, but are subtly thoughtful on closer inspection.

Büșra Kayikçi’s new album »Places« is a continuation and deepening of her first compositional studies. Her idea of combining music and architecture goes far beyond purely interdisciplinary thinking: »In our studies we learned to write a story before drawing a first line,« she says. »What kind of place will it be? Who will stay there? And for how long? We wrote detailed texts that guided us.« Now the composer turns the method around and captures places that inspire her in music. For Kayikçi, places are not only physical spaces: songs, human emotions and behaviour are just as locatable for the composer as spiritual buildings, the coast or olive trees. A space as architecturally sophisticated as the Recital Hall of the Elbphilharmonie is the perfect place to immerse oneself in her musical spaces with Büșra Kayikçi at the piano.
