Belcea Quartet
String quartets by Ludwig van Beethoven and Julien Anderson
From early to late
More than ten years ago, the world-famous Belcea Quartet played its way into the hearts of Hamburg music lovers with a large-scale Beethoven project, and since then it has made regular appearances at the Elbphilharmonie and the Laeiszhalle. This season, the four musicians return to their beginnings, performing a new work by the celebrated British composer Julian Anderson as well as two Beethoven quartets that couldn’t be more different if they tried.
This is no surprise, as some 25 years separate the two Beethoven works. The fiery and dramatic Quartet No. 4 in C minor is one of the early quartets with which Beethoven presented his calling card to Vienna audiences; these works take their cue from the classic quartets written by Haydn and Mozart. The String Quartet No. 12 in E-flat major dates from 1825, and ushers in the late Beethoven quartets with powerful, heroic sounds and a wonderful Adagio in the second movement.
