Founded in 2005, the Flemish ensemble B’Rock Orchestra not only stands for a process of rejuvenation in the field of early music performance; it is also a recognised authority on the music of Georg Philipp Telemann. From the outset, B’Rock Orchestra has been committed to performing works by the great German composer, who made a major contribution to musical life in Hamburg for almost half a century as cantor and musical director of the city’s five main churches. The orchestra performs Telemann’s oratorio »Der Tod Jesu« from 1755 together with the NDR Chor. The work is based not on the familiar Bible texts but on the libretto of the Berlin poet Karl Wilhelm Ramler, which focuses on the universal and human aspects of the Passion. Telemann developed this into a clearly structured score that is notable for its rich instrumentation.
