Music like champagne
As a conductor and singer, the versatile Canadian artist Barbara Hannigan is not just a master of »serious« art. She feels just as comfortable in the field of entertainment, which was enriched so dynamically by Kurt Weill’s chansons and musicals. In »Youkali« and »Lost in the Stars«, Hannigan performs two genuine classics by the composer of the Threepenny Opera.
Like Kurt Weill, the Paris king of the operetta Jacques Offenbach used the mode of entertainment to tackle the thorny issues of his age – the nineteenth century – with satirical scorn. The operetta version of »The Parisian Life« is still one of the Cologne-born composer’s most popular works, but the music, which fizzes like champagne, loses nothing of its power as a ballet too.
Finally, managing a balancing act between old and new, and between various theatrical forms, Igor Stravinsky’s ballet »Pulcinella« borrows from music by the Baroque composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710–1736). Incidentally, Stravinsky’s ballet was premiered with sets and costumes designed by Pablo Picasso.
