Rarity with powerful voices

All-female bands are still a rarity in the world of jazz, which is still dominated by men. But the six-strong Artemis ensemble, which was formed in 2017 by the Canadian pianist Renee Rosnes, is one. The band is named after the Greek goddess of hunting and childbirth, and the protector of women and children, and one song on the debut album of the same name is also dedicated to her.

The ensemble – which features a piano, trumpet, saxophone, clarinet and rhythm section – is naturally concerned with the feminist empowerment of female instrumentalists. But, like any other band, they focus first and foremost on creativity and musical expression. The song »Frida« about the Mexican painter and representative of folk surrealism Frida Kahlo is slightly reminiscent of Herbie Hancock’s classic »Maiden Voyage«, while »Step Forward« is contemporary hard bop in the tradition of Horace Silver. Artemis deconstruct Lee Morgan’s boogaloo classic »The Sidewinder«, producing a relaxed groove with slowed-down (feminine) power.
