Schubert / Bartók / Tchaikovsky
Exactly 30 years ago, 1989 saw the birth of the Artemis Quartet, which has long since become one of the world’s best-known string quartets. After their first acclaimed anniversary concert in March, the quartet now celebrates a second performance in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall, this time in an altered line-up: Suyoen Kim and Harriet Krijgh replace Anthea Kreston and Eckart Runge. The four musicians have chosen to play some of the top works of the repertoire: quartets by Schubert, Tchaikovsky and Bartók.
The Quartet Movement in C minor, first performed in 1867, is only a short piece, but its lovely melodies and dramatic depth make it an infectious Schubert composition. In Tchaikovsky’s Second String Quartet, by way of contrast, we are exposed not only to the Russian soul, but also to some Wagnerian flair and one or two waltz-like flourishes. Before that, the re-formed Artemis Quartet performs Béla Bartók’s Sixth String Quartet, his last contribution to the genre.
