Strawinsky / Ravel
Teodor Currentzis presents his new orchestral project »Utopia« in the Laeiszhalle, bringing together more than 100 musicians from 30 nations for the purpose. »A long-held dream comes true – not just for me, but for a big group of outstanding musicians from all over the world, who join forces to make no compromise in their search for the perfect sound,« enthuses the Greek conductor, who previously set up the orchestra »musicAeterna« and led it to world fame. »Utopia« unites artists from famous orchestras and chamber-music ensembles and from the freelance scene. Currentzis’s idea is to »transfer the dedication and intimacy of chamber-music playing to a large symphony orchestra, in order to rehearse together typical repertoire works at the highest level«. The programme features three of the most sophisticated orchestral works of the early 20th century, composed for the legendary ballet company »Ballets Russes« in Paris.
With his vibrant, colourful ballet score »Firebird«, Igor Stravinsky opened a new chapter in music history even before he triggered a scandal with his »Le sacre du printemps« (The Rite of Spring). He later compiled concert suites featuring the best numbers from »Firebird«, which had its premiere in Paris in 1910. This was music with which he followed in Ravel’s footsteps: as one of the leading representatives of musical Impressionism, Ravel was particularly fond of sensuous sounds, and exploited to the full the symphony orchestra’s potential by original and elegant combination of the individual instruments. While »Daphnis et Chloé« is set in an idealised pastoral world, »La Valse« pays tribute to the Viennese waltz in music of great opulence.
