Description

Philosopher and music theorist Theodor Adorno thought that writing a poem after the ordeal in Auschwitz was barbaric. Imre Kertész on the other hand, Nobel laureate in literature and one of the last Auschwitz survivors, had a different opinion. He inspired composers like Stefan Litwin to create works such as »..., die Hölle aber nicht.«

»I have always strived to understand why people are like this. It was about finding a way of expressing totalitarism in words.« And Imre Kertész found the right words. The Hungarian author’s texts form the basis of a spoken word and sound collage released on CD by Ensemble Resonanz in 2014, which includes Stefan Litwin’s »..., die Hölle aber nicht.«

Unlike Kertész, Gideon Klein did not survive the Nazi death camps. Many of his compositions, among them the deeply emotional Partita, originated during his imprisonment.

Mieczysław Weinberg was able to flee from the Nazis to Russia, but there he faced the terror of Stalin. His music, however, defiantly celebrates survival.
