Strauss: Rosen aus dem Süden / Schoenberg: Piano Concerto / Mozart: »Haffner« Symphony / Strauss: Kaiser-Walzer
Johann Strauss’s great achievement lies in the way he created works that – in terms of instrumentation, melodic ingenuity and the approach to themes – are on a level with the most outstanding works of symphonic music. In his wonderful waltz »Roses from the South«, which delights with melodic harmonies and passionate rhythms, the musical legacy of Viennese Classicism and Schubertian Romanticism live on.
Strauss’s waltz is followed by Arnold Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto Op. 42, a masterpiece of contemporary music that perfectly captures the contrast between Romanticism and atonality. From the opening march-like bars that are played in unison, Mozart’s Symphony No. 35 – the »Haffner« – exudes a special glamour and celebratory mood, and that for good reason. The work is based on a serenade Mozart composed in a hurry to mark the ennoblement of Siegmund Haffner in July 1782, after a request came via Mozart’s father. And the concert comes to a close with Johann Strauss’s famous Emperor’s Waltz, whose majestic sounds produce a uniquely convivial atmosphere.
