When he was twelve years old, Thomas von Steinaecker got to know the composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and there developed a close relationship that lasted until the latter’s death in 2007. The graphic novel »Der Mann, der vom Sirius kam« (The Man Who Came From Sirius) not only tells the story of this unusual friendship, but also gives a comprehensive account of the eccentric musical visionary’s life. The reading from the graphic novel (in German) is complemented by Karlheinz Stockhausen’s music.
Karlheinz Stockhausen was a great utopian, hence the decision to devote an extensive retrospective to him at the Hamburg International Music Festival. As head of the studio for electronic music at West German Radio (WDR), he used early forms of the synthesizer to create an entire cosmos of thitherto-unprecedented sounds, advancing into new musical dimensions in the process. His works breathe the rhythm of the stars, and get lost in the spiral nebulas of infinity.

Towards the end, the eccentric esoteric even claimed that he was from the planet Sirius. Notwithstanding, Stockhausen was the best-known and most important post-war German composer, influencing artists as diverse as the Beatles, Björk, Brian Eno, Pink Floyd, Amon Düül, Aphex Twin, Kraftwerk and Frank Zappa. Stockhausen believed firmly in a higher plane of human existence, and he believed that music was the key to it. It’s worth following him on this path: the utopia of music lives on.

Located within the base section of the Elbphilharmonie building on floors 2 and 3 are the Kaistudios, home to the Elbphilharmonie’s World of Instruments and extensive music education programme. The largest Kaistudio is the Elbphilharmonie’s third concert hall – ideal for concerts, experimental music, seminars and workshops for up to 150 guests.
Finding Your Seat
All visitors enter the building via the main entrance. The Kaistudio on floors 2 and 3 are not accessible via the Tube (long escalator), but rather using the stairs or group B lifts. Please follow the signs provided in the tunnel on right-hand side of the Tube. Admission is by concert ticket only.
The Elbphilharmonie can be easily reached by bus, underground, bicycle and ferry.

The Elbphilharmonie is a special building situated in a special place. Allow for plenty of time for getting to the Elbphilharmonie and the way to the concert area. We suggest first-time Elbphilharmonie visitors arrive at the main entrance 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event. Please note that it may not be possible to accommodate latecomers.
Concert tickets for the Grand and Recital Halls authorise a visit to the Plaza from two hours before the start of the concert or event. Visitors to the Kaistudios require a separate Plaza ticket to visit the Plaza.
The foyers of the Grand and Recital Halls open their doors 90 minutes before the start of the concert or event. The bars in each foyer open simultaneously.
Admission into the halls begins 30 minutes before the start of the concert or event.
Smoking is prohibited throughout the entire premises of the Elbphilharmonie.
