The Freiburger Barockorchester combines Bach arias and symphonies with two passion cantatas by Georg Philipp Telemann, written in 1721. At that time, Telemann was working in Hamburg as musical director, and he possibly wrote the cantatas for himself as baritone soloist. He might be forgiven for doing so because he did not know the enchanting vocal artistry of French countertenor Philippe Jaroussky.
»Recently, I have listened to many Bach cantatas in the evening,« wrote novelist Julian Green in his diary in 1965. »It seems to me that everything music can give to a person is in there: complete religious faith speaks from them. It does not matter how many mistakes one has made, you can always feel God’s joy going though you, like wind blowing through trees.«
The »complete faith« also speaks through the narrations in the Gospel of Luke. The aged Simeon was promised he would not die before seeing the Messiah. In the temple of Jerusalem, Simeon took baby Jesus into his arms and spoke the solemn words: »Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation.«
Bach’s cantata »Ich habe genug«, written in 1727 for the St. Thomas church in Leipzig, is a direct continuation of Telemann’s biblical »Canticum Simeonis«. According to musicologist Albert Schweizer, Bach’s music describes the »heavenly homesickness« of a person who has »said farewell to everything in this world«.
