Too much talent?

Can someone possess too much talent? In Philippe Jaroussky’s case, it’s tempting to answer »yes«, as there seems to be hardly any musical discipline that he is not proficient in. The French artist studied the piano and violin, harmonics and composition. And on the side he then discovered his talent for singing, and embarked on an international career as a countertenor. As if that weren’t enough, Jaroussky has also set up his own ensemble, is already planning his next career as a conductor, and teaches young talents in his own music academy. It doesn’t really come as a surprise, then, that he also finds time to unearth masterpieces lying forgotten in the archives.

Jaroussky makes a guest appearance at the Elbphilharmonie in this concert with a programme of such rediscovered works, among them music by Niccolò Jommelli and Johann Christian Bach. Too much talent? Perhaps. But when Jaroussky sings the first bars of an aria in his silvery, shimmering voice, no one in the audience is likely to complain.
