No compromises

There is not really any need to introduce Hélène Grimaud these days. The French-born pianist is long since an international star – feted by press and public alike, the winner of many awards, and at home in the world’s concert halls. What makes her so special, apart from her outstanding talent, is her highly emotional approach to the music and her absolute and uncompromising expressive will. Hardly any other artist manages as she does to blow the dust of performing history off well-known repertoire works, making them sound as fresh, new and direct as at their first performance.

Hélène Grimaud presents Johannes Brahms’s profound First Piano Concerto, in which she is accompanied by the London Philharmonic Orchestra under its conductor Edward Gardner. After the interval another first by the Hamburg master is performed, namely his Symphony in C minor, with which after a long inner struggle Brahms broke free of Beethoven as a role model and opened up new directions for the symphony genre.
