Admired masters

Variations, fantasies, rondos – while the time-honoured chamber-music genres of the First Viennese School seemed to have had their day in 1820s Vienna, their place was increasingly taken by different virtuoso genres. Franz Schubert’s »Introduction and Variations« of 1824 was to remain his sole work for the flute. He based it on his own song »Trockne Blumen«, taken from the cycle »Die schöne Müllerin« that he wrote the year before. Schubert wrote his »Rondo brillant«, a highly virtuoso piece for violin and piano, for the »Bohemian Paganini« Josef Slawjk. After the interval, the concert focuses on improvisations for the piano.
