Musical statement

As is well known, there are many ways to draw attention to social grievances and the discrimination of minorities. However, Joseph Haydn invented probably the most beautiful and tolerable form of silent protest in 1772. In loyal solidarity with the musicians of his court orchestra who were under his command, he humorously interceded musically for their well-deserved summer holidays in the company of their families. »My dear Haydn! I understand...Tomorrow we pack up,« Prince Esterházy is said to have said after one musician after another had left the stage in the famous »Farewell Symphony«...
