Sounds like the sunshine
Founded in 1998, the Doric String Quartet is approaching an important anniversary. It’s hard to believe that such a youthful ensemble will soon be celebrating 25 years of music. In addition to two famous quartets of Viennese Classicism, the four musicians also perform music from their homeland: Edward Elgar’s rarely performed String Quartet Op. 83. »Captured sunshine« is what Elgar’s wife heard in this string quartet, which he composed in his sixties.
Haydn’s String Quartet Op. 50 is known as »The Frog«. But can that quality be heard in the music? The quaint name comes from the »bariolage effect« employed in the composition – fast repetitions of notes, alternating between open and stopped strings. The concert opens with Beethoven’s shortest string quartet, his wonderfully powerful Op. 95.
