Sparks from the Carnatic Hemisphere

In the west, when we talk about classical Indian music, we’re usually referring to the Hindustani tradition of the north. The Carnatic sound world of the southern continent, in contrast, is relatively little-known in Europe. Aruna Sairam from Mumbai is one of its leading representatives. She is rooted in the tradition of the classical singing school, and she trained with outstanding gurus such as Balamurali Krishna. However, Sairam also draws inspiration from the urban sounds of the modern world, from Bollywood soundtracks and dance theatre.
