»Before God, and as an honest man, I tell you that your son is the greatest composer known to me either in person or by name.« This may have been the finest compliment Leopold Mozart ever received about his son Wolfgang Amadeus, coming as it did from none other than Joseph Haydn. The famous composer’s words of praise were prompted by the young Mozart’s presentation of six string quartets in his living room – and who would not wish to have been present when Mozart (viola) and Haydn (first violin) performed chamber music with friends? A similar intimacy in playing together is displayed by the musicians of the Hagen Quartett, who present Mozart’s masterpieces over four evenings in Hamburg. Consisting of three siblings from Salzburg and their »kindred spirit« Rainer Schmidt, the Hagen Quartett celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011. The family-based ensemble has firmly established itself as one of the finest string quartets around today; its 2006 recording of the complete Mozart string quartets has delighted critics and listeners all over the world and is expected still »to retain its importance in 30 years’ time«. In cooperation with the Hamburgische Vereinigung von Freunden der Kammermusik.
