The term »state of the art« generally refers to the newest version of technology, but in the series of the same name it has quite a literal meaning. In »State of the Art«, the best of what music has to offer today can be experienced: the most refined contemporary composers, accomplished musicians and up-to-date interpretations.

Modern music plays a big role in the Elbphilharmonie in any case and so the new series begins in January with the first-ever string quartet concert in the Recital Hall: the Arditti Quartet performs, among other works, a brand-new commission by the Korean-German composer Younghi Pagh-Paan.

»Downright genius« is how the Badische Zeitung described Enno Poppe’s cycle »Speicher«, which the master interpreters from Klangforum Wien are now bringing to the Elbphilharmonie.

The closing concert of the series focuses on current Elbphilharmonie resident artist Jörg Widmann, who takes centre stage as both clarinettist and composer. Among other, he performs a piece by Igor Stravinsky that was written on a beer mat and is dedicated to modern giant: Pablo Picasso.
