Young piano stars who show what their fingers are capable of: the programmes are virtuosic and dramatic, but also tender and touching. The focus is on the mazurka, a folk dance ennobled and refined by Chopin and other virtuosos

Fans of top-class piano art get their money’s worth in this series, which has a different theme every season. This time the focus is on the mazurka, originally a Polish folk dance in slow triple time, which refers to the Polish landscape of Mazovia. As a symbol of the Polish independence movement, it found its way into art music – above all through Frédéric Chopin, who composed around 60 mazurkas for piano, and later also through his compatriot Karol Szymanowski and others, who sympathised with both the elegiac character of the dance and the Polish cause, developing numerous national styles. This season, four very different keyboard artists present a selection from this rich repertoire.
