Description

Peter Eötvös explains his artistic credo as follows: »For me, composing involves enchanting the listener through sound«. As the Elbphilharmonie’s Artist in Residence, the Hungarian composer and conductor has plenty of opportunity to use his art to cast a spell over the Hamburg audiences.

The series starts with a concert with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam – considered by many experts as the world’s best orchestra –, in which Eötvös unveils his major commissioned work »Multiversum«, a kind of double concerto for organ and Hammond organ. Iveta Apkalna, the Elbphilharmonie’s titular organist, and her Hungarian colleague László Fassang are the soloists.

Shortly after the first concert, Eötvös opens the »Greatest Hits« festival with the contemporary music specialists Klangforum Wien, before he then brings Hans Werner Henze’s oratorio »Das Floß der Medusa« – which caused a scandal in 1968 – to the stage. Eötvös’s Hamburg residency is rounded off with an evening curated by him in the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall, and with conducting performances at the Hamburg State Opera and as part of the 3rd Hamburg International Music Festival at Kampnagel.
