Sufi Festival: A review

A three-day festival at the Elbphilharmonie portrayed the fascination of Sufism – with captivating music from Morocco to Pakistan and an extensive supporting programme.

For three days, from 25 to 27 November 2022, the Elbphilharmonie focused on the subject of »Sufism«, the expression of the Islamic faith in which music and dance play an outstanding role. The festival brought together different artistic versions of Sufism ranging in origin from North Africa to the Middle East: the programmes featured whirling dervishes from Istanbul, a Moroccan spiritual »Gnawa« ceremony, »Qawwali« singing from Pakistan and classical Afghan music. The concerts were supported by an extensive programme of spice tasting, talks, a producing workshop and a small art show entitled »Afghanistan – Pictures of Hope«.
