It’s well known that Igor Stravinsky had a soft spot for jazz, for its powerful rhythms, its propensity for dissonance and its enthralling harmonies. Shortly after the First World War, at a time when jazz and related movements were still very new in Europe, the Russian composer lifted the musical cousin from America onto the stool of European art music with his piece »Piano-Rag-Music«. Geir Lysne and the amazing soloists of the NDR Bigband explore how and to what extent Stravinsky’s love of jazz was reciprocated. In the programme »Windows to Stravinsky«, the Norwegian bandleader dissects his relationship to the Russian composer.

In a process of free association that has already proven successful in adaptations of music by Edvard Grieg and Krzysztof Penderecki, in »About Stravinsky – From My Point of View« Lysne combines colours, rhythms and sounds from the composer’s work to create his own vision of cross-border 21st-century big band music.
