They have both been welcome guests at the Elbphilharmonie since the inaugural season: the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra and conductor Ingo Metzmacher. But they appear here together for the first time. After a 15-year break, the orchestra celebrates a long-awaited reunion with its erstwhile chief conductor. The concert programme features music with which Metzmacher made a real name for himself during his Hamburg years: 20th century music, to which he dedicated an acclaimed CD cycle with the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra at the time.

He now continues his longstanding work with the Hamburg orchestra in a programme of music by Shostakovich, Hanns Eisler and Kurt Weill, rounded off by a Bach arrangement from the pen of Anton Webern. There is also an appearance by baritone Georg Nigl, who performs the intensive and thought-provoking song cycle »Ernste Gesänge« by Schönberg pupil Kurt Weill – the last work he completed, incidentally.

»My years in Hamburg were the period in my career when I was given the most scope to build something up continually.«
