Elphi at Home: Anna-Lena Schnabel & Florian Weber

An adventurous jazz duo plays in the empty Grand Hall.

The »Elphi at Home« series was born in spring 2020. When the concert halls were closed to the public, the Elbphilharmonie invited artists to stream concerts live from the Elbphilharmonie.

The performers

»A genuine discovery", wrote Der Spiegel, while Die Zeit described them as having »a strong character, inventive and full of soul«: 30-year-old saxophonist Anna-Lena Schnabel is one of the most exciting German jazz musicians of her generation. She grew up near Hanover, moving at the age of 18 to Hamburg, where she drew attention in the city's clubs with her imaginative playing. She has performed together with artists like Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Maria Joao and Samy Deluxe and ensembles such as the NDR Big Band und dem Orchestre National de Jazz, and with the Symphoniker Hamburg as a soloist. Concert engagements have taken her all over the world, and in 2018 she appeared at the Elbphilharmonie with her quartet.

For that concert, as in so many others, she was accompanied by pianist Florian Weber. The two of them released the album »Books, Bottles & Bamboo« in 2016, which was awarded an ECHO Jazz prize; the title refers to objects used to prepare Weber's piano before the recording session. Weber's career was marked from the outset by a love of experiment and musical diversity: he made a name for himself in the New York jazz scene, but also played classical piano concertos regularly. His debut album, the stylistically wide-ranging »Minsarah«, won the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik. Since then, there have been many further awards and records, with his latest album »Lucent Waters« being released on the ECM label.
