»Composing has nothing to do with work,« wrote Piotr I. Tchaikovsky happily to an acquaintance. As if in a frenzy, he composed his Violin Concerto in a small village on the shores of Lake Geneva, shaking off a period of difficult emotional crises. It worked: the concerto was one of the most free and joyous pieces the Russian composer ever wrote. With hauntingly beautiful melodies, thrilling dance sections and a virtuosic solo part, today the Violin Concerto is one of the best-known Romantic works of all – ideally suited for a versatile and sensitive soloist such as Leonidas Kavakos, who »makes the music breathe« (The Guardian).
Please note: Myung-Whun Chung has regrettably been forced to cancel his participation in this concert. The onductor Adam Fischer has kindly agreed to step in.
