From the New World
When Nicola Benedetti asked jazz trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis to write something for her nearly ten years ago, the Scottish violinist had no idea what was in store for her. It was basically a short piece that she had in mind. But it turned into a full-blown violin concerto almost 45 minutes long, where pretty much everything was alien to her. Wynton Marsalis had to start by explaining to her how to syncopate and how to let the sound of the notes »drown«, how individual sequences of notes are not played strictly in line with the metronome, but more casually. In short, Nicola Benedetti learned how to play jazz. And it turns out she has an exceptional talent for it: whenever she puts Marsalis on the programme, people go berserk at the end. It sounds like something from another world, making it a perfect match for Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony with the famous nickname, which the WDR Symphony Orchestra plays after the interval.
Please note: Nicola Benedetti has regrettably been forced to cancel her concert due to the travel restrictions.Daniel Lozakovich has kindly agreed to step in. Tickets retain their validity.
