Vincent Dubois
The Elbphilharmonie Organ
Vincent Dubois is nothing if not fleet of foot. And he needs to be for this recital – not only in the finale of Louis Vierne’s Sixth Symphony with its pedal cascades that are nothing short of breathtaking. This is the ultimate litmus test for every organist, a milestone of virtuosity. As one of the three titular organists of Parisian cathedral Notre-Dame, Dubois of course passes the test with flying colours.
Tonight’s programme also has an orchestral aspect, with Dubois exploiting to the full the symphonic side of the Elbphilharmonie’s Klais organ with arrangements of symphonic works and Liszt’s large-scale fantasia on a chorale from Meyerbeer’s opera »Die Propheten«. Here Liszt transforms a simple hymn into a spectacular, pathos-laden opus that shows every facet of the organ and of the art of variation.
