Turangalîla / Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester
Elbphilharmonie Summer
Olivier Messiaen’s mighty »Turangalîla« Symphony is one of the most remarkable works in the entire classical repertoire; extracts from the symphony were played during the Elbphilharmonie’s opening ceremony. The work combines the synesthete Messiaen’s imaginative association of colour and sound with his deep religious feeling; and it blends the acoustic power of a full symphony orchestra with the gentle sounds of Indonesian gamelan gongs and of the ondes Martenot, one of the earliest electronic instruments. Ingo Metzmacher, for many years Hamburg’s General Music Director, keeps track of things from the rostrum as he wields his conductor’s baton over the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester.
