Haydn heard anew

Offering new ways of looking at Joseph Haydn’s piano trios is a key objective for Trio Gaspard. At the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the three musicians from England, Germany and Greece do this by juxtaposing Haydn’s chamber music in exciting new ways with works by contemporary artists such as Kit Armstrong, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Sally Beamish. Shortly after they formed in 2010, Trio Gaspard won the prestigious »Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition« and they have been intensively exploring the Austrian composer’s music ever since.

Two of the trios on the programme were composed during Haydn’s second visit to England in 1794–95. Demand for chamber music featuring the piano was particularly high in London at the time, and these compositions brought Haydn a new level of international fame. Even though the demanding piano part still dominates in these late works, the string instruments are increasingly emancipated to become equal and independent voices.
