The Simply Quartet has cemented its reputation as one of the most talented international string quartets with a number of prestigious awards, including First Prize at the International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition in Vienna in 2017. The four musicians have a close relationship with Haydn’s music, as demonstrated in their »Haydn total« project. The Simply Quartet now combines one of Haydn’s most profound quartets with Franz Schubert’s famous work »Der Tod und das Mädchen« (Death and the Maiden).
The String Quartet in G major is one of a series of six works with which Haydn finally broke through as a leading quartet composer in 1781 – it also made him a model for Franz Schubert. In his penultimate string quartet, composed in 1824, Schubert drew on parts of his song »Der Tod und das Mädchen« to write this moving magnum opus for string quartet.
