Marathon on 88 keys

The sonata is for soloists what the symphony is for the orchestra – the supreme genre for their respective arts, in which composers of all eras have striven for the highest perfection. A remarkable number of sonatas have been composed for the piano, with Beethoven alone writing 32. But those won’t be the focus when Tamara Stefanovich puts on a very special sonata marathon in the Recital Hall. The extraordinary Belgrade-born pianist, a recognised authority on contemporary piano music, will be bringing together early Baroque masterpieces and ground-breaking examples from the 20th century in a three-part concert. Seemingly without transition, Bach is placed side by side with Busoni, Scarlatti with Scriabin, Soler with Hindemith – ultimately leading to Galina Ustvolskaya’s monumental, dimension-defying final piano sonata.

The concert is in three parts of around an hour each, punctuated by two one-hour intervals.
