Ludwig van Beethoven led Viennese classicism to its highest achievements and, by transcending it, simultaneously pointed to the future. The two groundbreaking compositions performed in this concert come from his middle period: his only violin concerto and his Sixth Symphony »Pastoral«, which were premiered in 1806 and 1808 respectively.
