»I enjoyed writing it, and I think it’s the most personal thing I have produced to date«, Gustav Mahler wote to his friend Bruno Walter in 1908. Mahler was referring to his orchestral song cycle »Das Lied von der Erde« (The Song of the Earth), which he had recently completed. Many critics regard the score as one of the composer’s best works. After the death of Sir Jeffrey Tate in summer 2017, the Symphoniker Hamburg’s principal guest conductor, Ion Marin, will be on the rostrum tonight.

Please note: Since the death of its principal conductor Sir Jeffrey Tate in June 2017, the Symphoniker Hamburg has reorganised its 2017/18 season. The concert programmes and the performers may be different from those originally published.
