Spanish Baroque music went into years of slumber until conductor and early music expert Eduardo López Banzo reanimated it with the Al Ayre Español ensemble, which he formed in 1988. The specialists of historically informed performance have been surprising and delighting audiences around the world with secular and sacred Baroque works for 30 years now. With a rousing and thought-provoking programme entitled »¡Vaya pastores de fiesta!«, the Al Ayre Español ensemble is joined by the Vozes del Ayre vocal quintet to celebrate a Spanish Christmas in the Baroque style.

The programme features pieces by important Spanish Baroque composers such as José de Torres and Juan Francés de Iribarren, including Christmas cantatas, dances such as the villancico, and exuberant burlesques. In contrast to holidays associated with the Virgin Mary and the Feast of Corpus Christi, Spanish Christmas celebrations in the seventeenth and eighteenth century were not exclusively of a serious and dignified nature – they also had a vibrant, joyful and humorous side!
