Key works from three phases of the modern era

This season’s opening is committed to exciting programmes, contemporary music and young musicians, to emotion, sensuality and intellectual challenge. Matthias Pintscher and the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra present key works from three phases of the modern era.

György Ligeti’s »San Francisco Polyphony« from 1974 is a lucidly woven sound tapestry that gently caresses the ears with its tonality and free sounds. Composed in 2009, Mark Andre’s »…hij… 1« sensitively explores the borderline between traditional music sounds and noise. And Igor Stravinsky’s ballet music for »The Firebird« leads the audience back to the beginnings of the modern era, approximately 100 years ago, with its positively ecstatic and vibrant musical expressionism.

An orchestra of gifted young musicians performs these works. During the summer, they gathered in Lucerne, Switzerland, to learn the skills necessary for contemporary classical music interpretation from experienced musicians during rehearsals, workshops and lectures.
