San Francisco SoundBox
with Yuja Wang, Nico Muhly & Esa-Pekka Salonen
A glimpse of the future
With their innovative »SoundBox« format, the San Francisco Symphony regularly transform their otherwise rather unglamourous rehearsal location into one of the city’s hottest concert venues. The orchestra invites the most creative minds in the contemporary scene to curate pioneering programmes with musical guests. After two performances in the Grand Hall, the orchestra’s members bring their Hamburg visit to a close by turning the Elbphilharmonie Recital Hall into a »SoundBox«, accompanied by their chief conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen and the star pianist Yuja Wang.
The creative mastermind behind the evening is the American composer and pianist Nico Muhly, who has been working closely with the orchestra for many years. Alongside his own music, the programme also includes some of the most exciting contemporary composers, including his two compatriots Caroline Shaw and Billy Childs, and one work by Salonen. These are juxtaposed with composers such as John Dowland and Johann Sebastian Bach in a perfect combination of tradition and the future.
