Salman Rushdie, reading

Nero Golden never again wanted to hear the name of the country he comes from – not since he moved to New York together with his three grown-up sons a couple of years ago. The unscrupulously ambitious and narcissistic Golden is the protagonist in Salman Rushdie’s new novel, and the story revolves around Golden’s rise and fall. With great narrative flair, Rushdie describes the decadent goings-on in the »Golden House«, whose owner shares not only his first name with the Emperor Nero, and again paints an apt picture of the world we live in.
The British-Indian writer Salman Rushdie became famous in the 1980s with his novel »Midnight’s Children«. His 12 novels have been awarded prestigious international prizes, and he has been singled out as the best of all Booker Prize winners. The Queen conferred a knighthood on him in 2007.
Salman Rushdie caused a major stir with his work »The Satanic Verses«, for which the Iranian head of state Khomeini issued a fatwa sentencing him to death. The fatwa is valid to this day, forcing Rushdie to regularly live under police protection.
